  • WALL LABEL: A Beautiful Line: Italian prints from Mantegna to Piranesi, 2012

Andrea Meldolla, called Schiavone, was amongst the first wave of Italian artists who experimented with the creative possibilities of etching. A painter and printmaker of idiosyncratic style, Schiavone was deeply influenced by the leading mannerist artist Parmigianino (1503-1540). Probably self-taught as a printmaker, Schiavone reworked his etching plates, experimenting with tools, inks and papers to achieve bold, new effects. In this print Schiavone has added a grey wash so as to heighten the tonal modelling of the image.
