5 August – 17 September
To coincide with the exhibition of a major new work by Sally Smart, the Studio ‘pops-up’ right inside the Gallery’s front door!
Sally Smart was born in South Australia at Quorn in the Flinders Ranges, an environment that she says shaped her as a young artist and which has seen her develop an artistic practice recognized internationally for producing stunning, large-scale cut-out assemblage installations. In her major new work created for the Art Gallery of South Australia, Smart uses collage, metal, cloth, paint and embroidery to collide influences and ideas including Ballets Russes and WayangKulit, Indonesian shadow puppetry.
After viewing Smart's work and other works in the permanent collection, students use collage techniques to create their own dream-like backdrops and whimsical characters from found images and recycled materials. Back at school, class groups collaborate to create a theatrical diorama from their creations, inspiring puppet-play and storytelling opportunities.
